Major Marine or Kenai Fjords Tours?

Two companies run every cruise on this site, and both check you in on the same street in Seward. Major Marine Tours keeps a short list of routes on catamarans and serves a deli lunch. Kenai Fjords Tours, part of Pursuit's Alaska Collection, runs more routes with a hot lunch and a wildlife guide on board. We are independent of both, and this guide sets them next to each other.

Two companies on one harbor street

Both operators sit on 4th Avenue in Seward, a short walk apart near the small boat harbor. Both sell through GetYourGuide and Viator, and when we compared them the price was the same on each site. Both also let you cancel free until 24 hours ahead on the main tours. One naming point first. Kenai Fjords Tours is a real company that Pursuit runs and also sells as the Alaska Collection. It is not this website, and we have no tie to it or to Major Marine beyond the booking links.

The two differ in boats and food, and in how many routes they sell. They overlap on what matters most, which is the park itself. Both send boats to the same tidewater glaciers and the same bird cliffs, and recent reviewers on both praise crews that work hard to find wildlife.

Major Marine Tours

Major Marine checks you in at the Harbor 360 Hotel, 1412 4th Ave. Its listings describe stable high-speed catamarans, and on Viator its 6-hour cruise includes a reserved seat in the heated cabin, so you are not racing other passengers for a window table. The captain narrates on the GetYourGuide listing, and Viator adds a naturalist on the full day. Lunch is a deli sandwich, with a vegetarian choice next to the turkey and roast beef. Hot drinks and water cost nothing extra. Binoculars are on board to borrow, and a full bar sells beer and cocktails.

It runs two main routes. The 6-hour cruise to Holgate Glacier, from ~$287, holds 4.9 from 2,186 reviews on Viator and 4.8 from 948 on GetYourGuide, the most reviewed cruise in Seward. GetYourGuide's review summary says the lunch could be better. The full day in Aialik Bay, from ~$319, our pick, scores 4.9 on both sites (795 reviews on Viator, 491 on GetYourGuide). Its summary notes that some guests wanted clearer advice on preparing for seasickness before a rough day.

The listings call the boats wheelchair accessible and allow service animals. The GetYourGuide listing keeps strollers and luggage ashore. Drones and tripods are not allowed either. If you arrive by train or by cruise ship on the day, Major Marine asks you to tell them in advance. In spring it also runs a 4-hour wildlife cruise for gray whales, from ~$123, with 5.0 from 44 on GetYourGuide. That one only sails in spring and includes no lunch, though food is on sale.

Kenai Fjords Tours

Kenai Fjords Tours has its office at 1304 4th Ave. Every main cruise carries a wildlife guide and serves a hot lunch, a Southwest chicken burrito with chips on the 6-hour listing, and the kitchen can make it meat-free or gluten-free if you ask. The fare already covers taxes and port fees, plus $1 that goes to the Alaska SeaLife Center. Its listings say the trips run in all weather and are not suitable for people prone to seasickness. Several reviewers mention all-women crews.

Where it pulls ahead is choice. It runs four of the six main tours on this site.

It also sells a shore-excursion version of the 6-hour cruise, from ~$230, which is timed for cruise-ship passengers. A reviewer says the office looked after their bags during the trip. It follows the regular 6-hour route and is only listed on Viator. You still need to fit 6 hours plus check-in around the ship. Its spring gray whale watch has the weakest reviews of the lot, and Major Marine's spring trip costs less.

The most reviewed cruise out of Seward

Major Marine's 6-hour run to Holgate Glacier and the Chiswell Islands saves you a seat in the warm cabin and includes lunch, from ~$287. More than 3,000 travelers have rated it across the two sites.

What the review scores say

All six main cruises average 4.7 or higher, so the stars alone will not decide this. The gaps sit in the details. Major Marine's 6-hour cruise has by far the largest pile of reviews, and the main complaint in its summary is the sandwich. Kenai Fjords Tours' 6-hour cruise has the lowest Viator score of the six at 4.7, and its GetYourGuide summary says some travelers wanted clearer expectations about which whales show up in which season. The smaller Kenai Fjords Tours routes score higher, though from fewer reviews. Whales are never guaranteed on either company's boats, and both listings say so; the whale guide explains the odds.

Who should pick which

  • Pick Major Marine if you want a catamaran that many guests find steadier and a saved seat in the cabin. Borrowed binoculars and a full bar come with it, and its full day is our overall pick;
  • Pick Kenai Fjords Tours for a hot lunch, a lower fare on the 6-hour cruise, a half day for small children, or the long run to Northwestern Fjord that nobody else sells daily;
  • Coming off a cruise ship with bags? Kenai Fjords Tours' shore-excursion trip, since Major Marine does not allow luggage aboard. Our cruise-ship day page plans the timing;
  • On a budget? Our price guide compares all nine fares per hour.

Dress for wind and spray on deck whichever company you choose, as our packing guide explains. Then settle the length of your day with our route-length guide.

Two fleets

Comparing the two companies

Is Kenai Fjords Tours the same as this website?

No. Kenai Fjords Tours is a real boat operator in Seward. Pursuit runs it, and it also goes by the Alaska Collection. This site is an independent comparison that does not run boats and is not linked to any operator or to the National Park Service.

Which operator serves the better lunch?

Kenai Fjords Tours cooks a hot meal, a chicken burrito on its 6-hour cruise. Vegetarian and gluten-free versions are available if you ask. Major Marine's lunch is a sandwich from the deli, and the review summary on one of its listings says the food could be better.

Which company is better if I get seasick?

Many guests find Major Marine's catamarans steadier, but no boat stays still in a Gulf of Alaska swell. Kenai Fjords Tours' listings say its cruises are not suitable for people prone to seasickness. The shortest route, in Resurrection Bay, is the gentlest choice.

Can I bring luggage on board?

Not on Major Marine, whose listing rules out luggage and strollers as well as drones and tripods. Cruise passengers with bags can look at Kenai Fjords Tours' shore-excursion cruise instead, where one reviewer's bags stayed at the office for the day.

Are the boats wheelchair accessible?

Major Marine's listing says its cruise is wheelchair accessible and allows service animals, and the Viator listing for Kenai Fjords Tours' 6-hour cruise says the same about access. Contact the operator before booking to confirm what you need.
